German Goodbye

RIGHT on cue for the upcoming winter collections, mother nature hurled one final blanket of snow on Berlin last week and if anyone knows how to cope with severe weather, it’s the German designer brigade. Plump, long-haired shaggy jackets at both Hugo Boss Black and Michalsky will be sure to entice highfalutin ladies from Bergen to Beijing, while Joop offered up cinched leatherette capes with glittery panels.

Bernhard Willhelm’s disturbed mountain men scaled a replica of the Eiffel Tour in vibrant ski gear, trimmed with gold tinsel beards and riotous make-up. The girls at Kaviar Gauche, however, went for an even more decadent take on winter dressing. Who needs a big fur coat when limousines await to whisk you around from one red carpet to another? Poker straight hair down to their thighs barely covered the models’ modesty and nude underwear, chains and fur stoles were the only complement to the supple leather bags swinging by.

The best new designers from eastern Europe were featured off-site at ProjektGalerie, like Lithuania’s Agne Kuzminckaite and Poland’s Ania Kuczynska. Twins Daniela and Annette from Felder Felder used their trusty trademark of antique buckles and studs to embellish disco-ready outfits in suede, leather and transparent chiffon. Plunging necklines and multi-tiered fringe maxi dresses stood out at Sisi Wasabi while cult labels C.Neeon and Lala Berlin proved that a cold snap can be red hot in wild prints and vivid colours.
